Commissioning a custom piece with Metalworks Wanaka is an exciting, collaborative process where your ideas are transformed into unique works of art in metal. Whether you’re envisioning a sculpture, brazier, gate, or personalised feature for your home or business, we combine decades of engineering expertise with artisan master craftsmanship to bring your vision to life. Each commission is as unique as the client we work with, and we take care to ensure the journey is as enjoyable as the finished creation.

How Our Commission Process Works

Step 1

Initial Conversation

Once you reach out, we’ll begin with a friendly chat about your ideas. This is your chance to tell us about your vision, whether you have a fully formed concept or just the seed of an idea.

What We’ll Ask You
To make sure we understand your vision clearly, we may ask:

What type of piece do you want custom made (sculpture, brazier, gate, sign, etc.)?
Do you have a particular style, theme, or inspiration in mind (you can share photos or links)?
Where will the piece live (indoors, outdoors, garden, business, public space)?
What materials, finishes, or colours do you prefer?
Will you need a shipping quote? (We ship domestically in New Zealand and internationally).
Approximately what budget or timeline do you have in mind?

Step 2

Concept & Design

We’ll develop initial sketches or design concepts based on your ideas, space, and preferences. At this stage we’ll also talk further about materials, size, style, and budget. For some projects, we’ll also begin CAD modelling at this stage, which may be invoiced separately.

Step 3

Refinement & Agreement

Together, we refine the design until it feels just right. Once you’re happy, we’ll confirm the timeline, pricing, and next steps so you know exactly what to expect. You’ll receive a final quote, and a 50% deposit is required before we move on to Step 4.

Step 4

Creation

This is when the magic happens! Steve and the Metalworks Wanaka team source the materials, prep the workshop, and bring your design to life. Every piece is shaped, welded, and finished with precision, artistry, and expert craftsmanship.

Step 5

Delivery & Installation

We’ll notify you with the final invoice when your work is ready. Upon payment, we’ll organise collection, installation, or freight. We’ll make sure everything is completed to the highest standard so you can enjoy your one-of-a-kind creation for years to come. If you’re happy to share a photo of your piece in its new home, we’d love to show the team and feature it on our social media channels. It’s a great way to inspire others who are considering commissioning a custom piece with us.
