Pouakai celebrates the awe-inspiring Haast Eagle, a legendary predator that once dominated New Zealand’s skies. This full-scale homage captures the eagle’s power, grace, and steady glide, allowing it to once again ride the wind. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted to reflect the eagle’s strength and presence, bringing a dramatic yet elegant energy to any setting.
Please note: Pouakai (Haast Eagle) and our signature Updraft sculpture (New Zealand Hawk/Kahu) share a similar concept, with each featuring a distinct movement mechanism. Updraft is fixed to the end of a balancing arm, allowing a simple bobbing motion with 360-degree rotation, functioning as a kinetic weather vane. Pouakai, our more recent design, incorporates an advanced balancing system inspired by a four-link rear suspension, keeping the bird level throughout its full vertical motion. This mechanism allows for more lifelike movement, and the sculpture itself includes additional detailing to capture the majestic presence of the Haast Eagle.
Steve is driven by a deep respect for anatomical accuracy in his flora and fauna work, and Pouakai takes this to another level. Every detail has been carefully considered, not only in form, but in movement with a unique balancing system that keeps the bird level as it moves, creating a smooth, natural glide as it responds to the wind.
The original design spans an impressive 3 metres, true to the scale of the Haast Eagle as it once soared across New Zealand skies. This full-scale presence creates a real sense of awe, drawing people in as the sculpture moves with the unseen forces around it. The result is both striking and calming — a piece that captures attention while offering a moment of stillness and connection.
Pouakai is available in standard sizes and materials, with plinth options to suit a range of spaces. The 3 metre and 1.5 metre wingspans are our established designs, ready to be created. We also offer custom sizing, starting from 1.5 metres and scaling beyond 3 metres for larger, statement installations.
