Updraft is our signature kinetic sculpture – a New Zealand Hawk (Kāhu) hand-built to move with the wind, functioning as a kinetic weather vane. Available in four sizes and a choice of steel finishes, it’s a centrepiece built to bring quiet motion into any outdoor space.
In the region where we live, gliding hawks (Kāhu) commonly dot the skies. Watching them, a sense of awe, grace, and calm washes over us – the same way fire draws us in, we find that the invisible element of wind acting on a visible object holds a similar pull. Updraft is our way of capturing that lived experience of watching Kahu dancing through the skies and sharing that experience through art.
Updraft is a stunning centrepiece for any view. This kinetic sculpture captures the power and grace of the New Zealand Hawk as it moves with the wind, designed to function as a weather vane – its beak always points downwind. The gentle undulation of the wings brings a sense of calm and connection to nature to any garden or outdoor space.
The body of every bird is hand-built by our skilled metal artisans in New Zealand, designed by Steve Rumore. Every counterweight is matched individually to each bird for perfect balance, which means no two Updraft sculptures move in quite the same way – each one is genuinely unique.
Updraft is available in four wingspans – 600 mm, 800 mm, 1500 mm, and 3000 mm – and can be crafted in stainless steel, carbon steel, or mild steel. Finish options include pre-rusted, natural steel (which will rust and develop character over time) or an etching paint option, so you can choose the look that suits your space.

Every piece is designed to flat-pack for easy shipping worldwide, making Updraft accessible to collectors far beyond Wanaka.
“Amazing and lifelike sculptures! I can’t say enough about this family-owned company and their unique ability to capture life in their work. ‘Updraft’ is my favourite. The constant motion in perfect balance is a metaphor for life.” — Lisa Popowich, USA
Updraft shares its core concept with our larger Pouakai (Haast Eagle) sculpture, though each uses a distinct movement mechanism. Updraft bobs and rotates 360 degrees as a true kinetic weather vane, while Pouakai uses an advanced suspension-inspired system to stay level through a more true-to-life vertical motion.
We also welcome custom commissions – whether your vision is a falcon, eagle, or another form inspired by motion and nature, we’d love to help you explore it.
