The Updraft Kārearea was created as part of the Falcon Collection, a special initiative supporting the work of the Kārearea Falcon Trust and helping to raise awareness of these remarkable native birds. Each bird is individually hand built by our skilled metal artisans, with every counterweight carefully matched to achieve perfect balance. This means every Updraft has its own subtle character and is truly one of a kind.

PLEASE NOTE: Updraft and our Pouakai (Haast Eagle) share a similar concept, with each featuring a distinct movement mechanism. Updraft is fixed to the end of a balancing arm, allowing a simple bobbing motion with 360-degree rotation, functioning as a kinetic weather vane. Pouakai, our more recent design, incorporates an advanced balancing system inspired by a four-link rear suspension, keeping the bird level throughout its full vertical motion. This mechanism allows for more true to life movement, with the bird remaining level through the balancing arm motion. The sculpture itself includes additional detailing to capture the majestic presence of the Haast Eagle.

The Updraft Kārearea is available in a variety of sizes and can be crafted in either corten or stainless steel. Finish options can include pre-rusted, natural steel, which will develop a unique patina over time, or an etched paint finish.
